Truckstop.com and FTR Transportation Intelligence have released their week 32 Spot Market Overall index, indicating that spot rates declined more than usual in the latest week.
Broker-posted spot rates in the Truckstop.com system remained very strong during the week ended August 14 (week 32) but were weaker than seasonally expected as they had been the week before. Flatbed spot rates fell the most in a comparable week since at least 2008. Dry van rates have fallen by more in a comparable week only once before. Refrigerated rates have risen in five comparable weeks over the past decade. Week 33 usually sees lower dry van and flatbed rates while refrigerated rates are mixed, according to the report
For the Dry Van market, 3 of the 4 key market indicators decreased in the latest week. The Van MDI decreased 19.0 points to 212.7 as load availability fell 2.1% and truck availability rose 6.7%. Compared to last year the MDI is up 81.4 points, or 62.1%. Last week, Van rates declined 2.6% to $2.62. Compared to last year, rates are up 36.1%.
For the Refrigerated market, 3 of the 4 key market indicators decreased in the latest week. The Refrigerated MDI increased 38.3 points to 454.9 as load availability decreased 2.0% and truck availability decreased 10.3%. Compared to last year the MDI is up 275.9 points, or 154.1%. Last week, Refrigerated rates fell 0.8% to $3.30. Compared to last year, rates are up 37.3%.
For the Flatbed market, 4 of the 4 key market indicators decreased in the latest week. The Flatbed MDI decreased 1.0 points to 155.7 as load availability fell 3.1% and truck availability decreased 2.5%. Compared to last year the MDI is up 59.6 points, or 62.0%. Last week, Flatbed rates declined 2.3% to $3.34. Compared to last year, rates are up 41.1%.
For the Specialized market, 3 of the 4 key market indicators decreased in the latest week. The Specialized MDI decreased 4.3 points to 34.9 as load availability fell by 3.7% and truck availability rose 8.2%. Compared to last year the MDI is up 9.1 points, or 35.3%. Last week, Specialized rates fell 1.5% to $3.26. Compared to last year, rates are up 30.2%.
