Fifth Third Names King Head of the Commercial Bank

October 09, 2026, 07:13 AM

Fifth Third Bancorp announced that Darren King, executive vice president, has been named head of the Commercial Bank, which now includes the Regional Banking business he already leads. King has led the Commercial Bank on an interim basis since June.

Together, the two businesses give clients a bank that knows them and knows their industry. Behind every relationship is the full strength of Fifth Third, from lending and treasury management to payments, capital markets and wealth management.

King now leads a Commercial Bank significantly larger than it was a year ago. The combination with Comerica increased Fifth Third's middle market sales force by more than 75% and strengthened its industry specialties, including Innovation Banking, environmental services and equity fund finance.

“Darren has led the Commercial Bank through one of the most consequential periods in its history, and he has earned the opportunity to build what comes next,” said Tim Spence, chairman, CEO and president of Fifth Third. “We now have the bankers, the industry expertise and the reach to be the bank of choice for businesses across the Midwest, the Southeast, Texas and California, and in every industry we cover. Darren is the right leader to get us there.”

“Our approach starts with a simple principle: put the best team in front of every client,” King said. “We have outstanding bankers across our markets, and industry teams that know their sectors as well as anyone in the business. My job is to make sure our clients benefit from the full capabilities of Fifth Third.”

King joined Fifth Third in 2025 as head of Regional Banking and Wealth Management. He previously spent 24 years at M&T Bank, where he served as chief financial officer, head of consumer banking, head of business banking and ultimately co-head of business, overseeing all of M&T's bank divisions.
