New orders for U.S. manufactured durable goods rose in August after two straight months of declines, according to the latest Census Bureau report.

  • New Orders: Up 2.9% to $312.1 billion, following July’s 2.7% drop. Excluding transportation, orders gained 0.4%; excluding defense, they climbed 1.9%. Transportation equipment led the rebound with a 7.9% jump to $110.2 billion.
  • Shipments: Fell 0.2% to $307.5 billion, snapping an eight-month streak of increases. Transportation equipment accounted for most of the decline.
  • Unfilled Orders: Increased 0.7% to $1.48 trillion, with transportation equipment again driving the growth.
  • Inventories: Essentially flat at $590.8 billion, breaking a 10-month run of gains. Transportation equipment was the largest drag.
  • Capital Goods: Nondefense orders surged 5.1% to $95.0 billion, while defense orders rose 3.5% to $15.8 billion.

The next report will be released October 27, 2025.
