OOIDA: AI Sector Fuels Freight Demand as Market Tightens and Costs Rise

August 28, 2026, 07:09 AM

The Owner-Operators Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has released its August Market Report, indicating that market demand remains firm. Still, seasonal declines are evident, with rates stabilizing or falling slightly amid capacity increases and rising costs due to geopolitical and inflation pressures. The Total Spot Market Cycle Indicator (TSMCI) signals a market shift, while regional demand varies. Spot rates and indices show mixed signals, with some sectors and regions experiencing declines, but overall demand and freight indices remain above long-term averages.

Highlights from the report:

1. Freight Demand is Firming, Driven by AI Sector

  • Overall freight demand is stronger than previously expected, but growth is increasingly concentrated in sectors supporting AI infrastructure, rather than being broad-based across the economy.

2. Capacity is Tight but Increasing

  • Trucking capacity remains tight, similar to 2013 levels, but there are early signs that carriers are starting to add more capacity, which could impact future rates and market balance.

3. Rates are Up but Showing Seasonal Decline

  • Spot rates for van, flatbed, and reefer segments have risen due to tight capacity, but are currently falling in line with typical seasonal patterns. The market cycle indicator (TSMCI) contracted for the first time in eight months.

4. Operating Costs are Rising Sharply

  • Costs, especially for fuel and maintenance, have increased significantly due to geopolitical tensions and refinery issues. This cost-push inflation is a major concern for carriers.

5. Market Outlook is Uncertain

  • While some indicators are positive (e.g., manufacturing PMI expansion, intermodal growth), the outlook remains neutral due to risks from geopolitical events, inflation, a possible interest rate hike, and the market's reliance on the AI buildout. There are questions about the sustainability of the current recovery as 2027 approaches.
